What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small screw-shaped post, usually made of titanium or titanium alloy, that is placed into the jawbone where a tooth root used to be. Over the following months, bone can grow closely against the implant surface — a process called osseointegration — so it becomes a stable anchor. A connector called an abutment is then attached, and a custom crown, bridge or denture is fixed on top to restore the appearance and function of the missing teeth.

Because the implant sits in the bone, it can help stimulate the area and slow the shrinkage that normally follows tooth loss. It also replaces a tooth without needing to prepare the neighbouring teeth, as a conventional bridge does. These advantages come with requirements: enough healthy bone, healthy gums, good general health and a commitment to cleaning and regular reviews.

At our clinic, implant treatment is planned digitally before surgery. Three-dimensional imaging shows bone height, width and the position of nerves and sinuses, so the implant can be positioned for the final tooth rather than simply where bone happens to be. Where bone is insufficient, grafting or a sinus lift may be discussed as a preliminary step. Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth with an implant-supported bridge, or a full arch. Full-arch options such as All-on-4 and All-on-6 have their own dedicated pages.

What they can help with

  • Replace one or more missing teeth with a fixed, stable restoration
  • Restore comfortable chewing and clear speech
  • Avoid preparing healthy neighbouring teeth for a bridge
  • Help preserve jawbone volume in the area of tooth loss
  • Provide a stable anchor for crowns, bridges or dentures

Who are dental implants for?

Most healthy adults who have lost a tooth can be assessed for implants. Whether treatment is advisable, and whether extra procedures are needed first, depends on several factors that your clinician will review in detail.

Often a good fit

  • Adults whose jaw growth is complete and who have one or more missing teeth
  • Patients with sufficient bone, or who are suitable for bone grafting
  • Those with healthy gums or gum disease that is under control
  • People able to maintain thorough daily cleaning and attend reviews

Assessed carefully

  • Bone volume and density at the implant site
  • Smoking, which is associated with higher implant complication rates
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or conditions and medications affecting healing or bone
  • History of radiotherapy to the head and neck
  • Grinding or clenching habits that increase load on the implant
  • Active gum disease elsewhere in the mouth

Honest information

Benefits, limitations & risks

Potential benefits

  • Fixed replacement that does not rely on adjacent teeth for support
  • Can restore chewing function close to that of natural teeth
  • Helps maintain bone in the area where a tooth is missing
  • Restorations are custom-made to match surrounding teeth
  • Can stabilise dentures that would otherwise move

Limitations

  • Treatment usually spans several months and more than one visit
  • Additional procedures such as bone grafting may be required first
  • Implants need daily cleaning and ongoing professional reviews
  • Gum shape around implants can differ slightly from natural teeth, especially at the front

Possible risks

  • Swelling, bruising and discomfort after surgery
  • Infection around the implant during healing or later on
  • Failure of the implant to integrate with the bone, which may require removal and re-treatment
  • Peri-implantitis, an inflammatory condition that can cause bone loss around an implant
  • Rarely, nerve irritation causing altered sensation, or sinus involvement in the upper jaw
  • Mechanical problems such as loosening screws or chipped crowns over time

The procedure

Dental Implants, step by step

Implant position is planned with the final tooth in mind, so the restoration can be cleaned easily and look natural. Technology supports the plan; clinical judgement decides it.

  1. Step 01

    Assessment and 3D imaging

Your clinician examines your mouth, reviews your medical history and takes a 3D scan (CBCT) to measure the bone and locate nerves and sinuses. An intraoral scan records your teeth and bite, and the implant position is planned around the future tooth.

  2. Step 02

    Implant placement

Under local anaesthetic, a small opening is made in the gum and a precise channel is prepared in the bone. The implant is inserted and either covered by the gum or fitted with a healing cap. A temporary tooth may be provided for appearance where appropriate.

  3. Step 03

    Healing and osseointegration

Over the following months, bone can bond to the implant surface. This period is often around two to six months, depending on the site, bone quality and whether grafting was performed. Many international patients return home during this stage.

  4. Step 04

    Abutment and impression

Once the implant is stable, an abutment is connected and the area is scanned to capture the exact position of the implant and the surrounding gum. This information is used to design the final restoration.

  5. Step 05

    Final crown or bridge

The custom crown or bridge — often zirconia or porcelain fused to a stable framework — is screwed or cemented in place. The shape, shade and bite are checked and adjusted so it blends with your natural teeth.

  6. Step 06

    Review and maintenance

Follow-up visits check the gum around the implant, the bite and the restoration. Long-term, implants need daily cleaning and regular professional reviews, much like natural teeth.

Before & after treatment

Preparation & aftercare

Before you travel

  1. Share your full medical history, medications and any previous dental surgery
  2. Bring recent X-rays or 3D scans if you have them
  3. Have any active gum disease or decay treated beforehand
  4. If you smoke, stopping before and after surgery can support healing — ask for advice
  5. Plan soft meals and a quieter schedule for the first few days after placement

Looking after them

  1. Follow your clinician’s written aftercare closely; personalised instructions always prevail
  2. Use cold compresses on the first day and take pain relief as recommended
  3. Eat soft food and avoid chewing directly on the implant site during healing
  4. Rinse gently as advised and keep the area clean without disturbing stitches
  5. Avoid smoking and alcohol in the early healing period
  6. Attend reviews and continue daily cleaning around the implant once restored

Questions

Asked about dental implants.

General answers — your own plan always depends on an individual assessment.

All dental questions
How long do dental implants last?

Many implants function for a long time, but no implant lasts forever for everyone. Longevity depends on bone health, gum health, bite forces, smoking and how well the implant is cleaned and reviewed. The crown on top may need replacing at some point.

Does implant surgery hurt?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Afterwards, swelling and soreness are common for several days and are usually managed with recommended pain relief.

Can I get teeth on the same day as my implant?

Sometimes. Immediate loading with a temporary tooth may be possible when the implant is very stable at placement and bite forces can be controlled. In many cases, a healing period comes first. Your clinician will advise after assessment.

What if I do not have enough bone?

Bone grafting or a sinus lift may be able to create enough volume, or a different implant position or size may be considered. These steps can add time to treatment and are discussed before you commit.

How many trips to Istanbul will I need?

Commonly two: one for assessment and placement, and another for the final restoration after healing. Extra visits may be needed if grafting is required. Your coordinator can help you plan around your schedule.

Can an implant get gum disease?

Implants cannot decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed — a condition called peri-implantitis. Daily cleaning, avoiding smoking and regular check-ups help reduce the risk.
