General answers — your own plan always depends on an individual assessment.
All dental questionsIt depends largely on how much healthy tooth structure you have. Veneers cover the front surface and are often considered for teeth that are sound but discoloured, chipped or slightly uneven. Crowns cover the whole tooth and may be recommended where a tooth is heavily filled, cracked or has had root canal treatment. Your clinician will examine your teeth, review X-rays where needed and explain the options, including more conservative alternatives such as bonding or whitening, before any recommendation is made.
In many cases a thin layer of enamel is reshaped so the veneer can sit naturally without looking bulky. The amount varies with the type of veneer, the position of your teeth and the result you are hoping for. Some situations allow minimal preparation; others need more. Because enamel does not grow back, preparation is usually considered irreversible, and your clinician should talk this through with you clearly before you decide to go ahead.
Both are ceramic materials used for veneers and crowns. Lithium disilicate (often called e.max) is valued for its translucency and is frequently chosen for front teeth where appearance matters most. Zirconia is very strong and may be preferred for back teeth, bridges or patients who grind. Each has trade-offs in aesthetics, strength and the amount of preparation needed. Your clinician can explain which material fits your bite, your habits and the look you would like.
Often, yes, and it is worth discussing early. Ceramic restorations do not change colour with whitening, so if you would like your natural teeth to be lighter, whitening is usually done first and the shade of new veneers or crowns is then matched to the result. Whitening is not suitable for everyone — sensitivity, existing restorations and gum health all play a part — so your clinician will assess this during your consultation.
Smile design is a planning process rather than a single treatment. It usually starts with photographs, an intraoral scan and a conversation about what you would like to change. Your clinician considers tooth proportions, gum line, lip movement and facial features, then proposes a plan that may combine whitening, veneers, crowns or gum contouring. A digital preview or trial smile may be used to help you visualise the direction, although the final result depends on your individual anatomy.
Sometimes. Implants need enough healthy bone to be stable, and bone can reduce after a tooth has been missing for a while. A 3D scan helps your clinician judge the volume available. Where bone is limited, bone grafting or alternative approaches may be discussed, and these can lengthen the overall timeline. In some cases a bridge or a removable option may be more appropriate. The right choice depends on your health, your scans and your priorities.
There is no fixed lifespan. Well-made ceramic restorations can last many years, but longevity depends on your oral hygiene, bite, habits such as grinding or nail biting, and regular check-ups. Restorations may eventually need repair or replacement, and the underlying teeth and gums still need care. Your clinician will explain what you can do to protect your treatment, which may include wearing a night guard if you clench or grind.
