What is hair mesotherapy?

Hair mesotherapy delivers small volumes of a prepared solution into the upper layers of the scalp through many fine injections, by hand or with a mesotherapy device. Depending on the product, the solution may contain vitamins, amino acids, minerals, hyaluronic acid, plant extracts or, in some protocols, medicines used in hair loss. The idea is to place these substances close to the follicles, but the treatment does not create new follicles or reverse loss where follicles have already gone.

The evidence for mesotherapy in hair loss is limited. Studies are generally small, often use different mixtures and schedules, and measure results in different ways, so it is difficult to say which formulations, if any, help and for whom. Some people report reduced shedding or a slight improvement in thickness; others notice little change. Products are not standardised between clinics, which is another reason to ask exactly what would be injected and why.

For these reasons, mesotherapy is best seen as an optional adjunct that some people choose to try, not as a primary treatment. A clear diagnosis comes first. Pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium after illness or stress, iron or thyroid problems, alopecia areata and scarring alopecias are managed very differently, and some need a doctor or dermatologist rather than any scalp injection.

What it can help with

  • Possibly support thinning but still-active follicles as part of a wider plan
  • Offer a non-surgical option for people who accept uncertain benefit
  • Complement, not replace, medical therapy or a transplant where appropriate

Who is hair mesotherapy for?

Mesotherapy is only reasonable once the cause of hair loss has been assessed. It is unlikely to help smooth, bald areas, and some health conditions or allergies make it unsuitable.

Often a good fit

  • Adults with early or moderate thinning rather than complete loss
  • People whose hair loss has been diagnosed and is not caused by an untreated medical problem
  • Those with a healthy scalp and no active infection or inflammation
  • Patients with realistic expectations who accept that results vary

Assessed carefully

  • Type and cause of hair loss; scarring alopecias are generally not suitable
  • Allergies to any ingredient in the proposed solution
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding, when treatment is usually avoided
  • Bleeding disorders, anticoagulant medicines or a tendency to bruise easily
  • Active scalp infection, psoriasis flare or broken skin
  • Autoimmune disease, active cancer treatment or other significant illness

Honest information

Benefits, limitations & risks

Potential benefits

  • Non-surgical, with little or no downtime for most people
  • Can be combined with medical therapy or follow a transplant, where appropriate
  • Each session is brief
  • Some people notice reduced shedding or slightly thicker-feeling hair

Limitations

  • Evidence is limited and variable; many people see little change
  • Does not regrow hair where follicles have been lost
  • Usually needs a course of sessions and possibly maintenance
  • Formulations differ between clinics, so results are hard to compare
  • Not a substitute for diagnosis, medical treatment or a transplant

Possible risks

  • Pain, redness or pinpoint bleeding at injection sites
  • Bruising, swelling or a temporary headache
  • Allergic or irritant reactions to ingredients
  • Infection, which is uncommon when hygiene is careful
  • Temporary increase in shedding in some people
  • Rarely, skin reactions or nodules at injection sites

The procedure

Hair Mesotherapy, step by step

Mesotherapy is presented here in general terms and with caution. It belongs, if at all, inside a plan that starts with diagnosis and gives proven treatments their proper place.

  1. Step 01

    Diagnosis first

Your clinician reviews the pattern and history of your hair loss, your general health and your medicines, and examines the scalp. Blood tests or a dermatology opinion may be suggested before any injection treatment is discussed.

  2. Step 02

    Discussing the solution

If mesotherapy is considered, you are told which product would be used, what it contains and why. This is the time to mention allergies and to ask about the evidence for that particular formulation.

  3. Step 03

    Scalp preparation

The scalp is cleaned with an antiseptic. A numbing cream or cooling may be used for comfort, as the injections are superficial but numerous.

  4. Step 04

    Micro-injections

Small amounts of the solution are injected across the thinning areas with a fine needle or device. A session typically lasts a short time, depending on the area treated.

  5. Step 05

    Course and review

Sessions are usually repeated over a course. Standardised photographs are taken at the start and at review, so you and your clinician can judge honestly whether continuing is worthwhile.

Mesotherapy, PRP and medical therapy

Mesotherapy injects a prepared solution, such as vitamins, amino acids or other ingredients, chosen by the clinic. PRP injects plasma concentrated from your own blood. Both are adjuncts with limited or mixed evidence. Medical therapy for pattern hair loss, prescribed by a doctor, has a more established evidence base and works differently, by acting on the hormonal or growth pathways involved. None of these creates new follicles; a transplant redistributes existing ones.

Before & after treatment

Preparation & aftercare

Before you travel

  1. Share your full medical history, medicines, supplements and any allergies
  2. Ask exactly which product would be injected and what it contains
  3. Avoid medicines that increase bleeding before treatment only if your doctor agrees
  4. Arrive with clean hair, free of styling products

Afterwards

  1. Follow your clinician’s instructions; they take priority over general guidance
  2. Avoid washing your hair for the period advised, often the rest of the day
  3. Avoid touching or scratching the scalp, and skip hair products until advised
  4. Avoid saunas, swimming and intense exercise on the day of treatment
  5. Report spreading redness, swelling, pain or any signs of an allergic reaction
  6. Keep up any medical treatment you have been prescribed

Questions

Asked about hair mesotherapy.

General answers — your own plan always depends on an individual assessment.

All hair questions
Does hair mesotherapy work?

The evidence is limited and results vary. Some people notice less shedding or slightly thicker hair, while others see no change. It is not possible to predict who will respond, and regrowth is not guaranteed.

What is injected during mesotherapy?

It depends on the product. Solutions may contain vitamins, amino acids, minerals, hyaluronic acid or other ingredients. You should be told exactly what is proposed and why before agreeing.

Is mesotherapy the same as PRP?

No. PRP uses plasma prepared from your own blood, whereas mesotherapy uses a manufactured or compounded solution. They are sometimes offered for similar reasons, and both have limited evidence.

Can mesotherapy replace hair loss medication?

It should not be seen that way. Medical therapy prescribed by a doctor has a more established evidence base for pattern hair loss. Do not stop prescribed treatment without speaking to your doctor.

Who should avoid hair mesotherapy?

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have allergies to the ingredients, bleeding disorders, active scalp infection or certain medical conditions may be advised against it. Your clinician will review your history.

Is it available through VERAKS HEALTH?

If this option is relevant to you, availability at our clinic and your suitability are confirmed during your consultation.
